Tube and vial labels
Measure the real tube with the cap on. Catalog photographs hide skirts, tapers, and writing patches.
Tubes and vials are the default laboratory container: centrifuge tubes, cryovials, scintillation vials, autosampler vials, and screw-cap microcentrifuge tubes. All of them are curved. All of them have a cap that people will handle more than the wall. The label has to stay on the wall through that handling.
Calculate wrap before you print a thousand labels
Circumference is π times diameter. A 12 mm vial needs about 38 mm of wrap with no overlap. Add overlap if your SOP wants the end to land on the label face, which can reduce peel-up. Subtract any area you must leave clear for graduation marks or a viewing window. Height is whatever remains between the cap skirt and the base—often less than the tube looks in a catalog photo.
If you change vendors, remeasure. Mold seams, writing patches, and slightly oval tubes change contact. The article wrapping labels on curved surfaces covers wrinkles and flagging.
Caps are not identity
Caps are shared, lost, and autoclaved separately. A cap mark is a convenience, not a unique specimen ID, unless your SOP forbids cap swapping and you still keep a wall mark. Clinical identification programs described by CAP, CLSI, and The Joint Commission assume the specimen remains traceable; they do not bless cap-only marking.
Fill state and temperature at application
An empty tube at 20 °C is the easy case. A tube from an ice bucket is wet and cold. A tube from a −80 °C freezer is frosted. Adhesive needs a dry landing zone. Centrifugation and solvents
If a labeled tube will be spun, the label must not create imbalance or peel under radial load. Edges should be fully seated. If the tube will see phenol, chloroform, DMSO, or alcohols, the wrap edge is a wick. Pair the tube discussion with chemical-resistant labels.
Barcodes on small diameters
A linear barcode needs a minimum bar width and quiet zones defined in ISO/IEC 15416 quality concepts and in GS1 symbol specifications. On a 0.5 mL vial those numbers collide with physics. Two-dimensional symbols pack more data in a square, which is why many cryovials use 2D codes on the base or on a flag. Bases get scratched on racks; flags get torn. Base barcodes, walls, and racks
Some cryovials include a molded patch for a 2D code on the base so a scanner in a rack can read upward. Those marks still need contrast after scuffing on metal. A wall wrap remains useful when a person picks a single vial. Using both is not redundancy for its own sake: it matches two different retrieval gestures. If you add a wall label over a factory mark, do not collide the quiet zones.
Centrifuges punish loose edges and lopsided wraps. A flag that is fine in a box can tear or unbalance a rotor. If a labeled tube will be spun, include a spin in the trial at the real speed and temperature. Imbalance is a safety issue, not only a labeling inconvenience.
Writing patches and factory printing
Factory-printed graduations and patches are coatings. Adhesives may wet them poorly. If the only convenient landing zone is the patch, that is the substrate you must test. Do not assume the adjacent clear polypropylene behaves the same.

Should the barcode go around the tube or along its length?
Match the scanner. Automated readers often expect a consistent orientation. Quiet zones must not fall into the overlap or the cap skirt.
Can I use a flag on every vial?
Flags increase code size but catch on boxes. Test the storage box, not only the bench.
Why do labels wrinkle on conical tubes?
The diameter changes along the height. A rectangular label designed for a straight cylinder will buckle on a taper. Use a size that sits on the straight section.
Is glass easier than plastic?
Glass often wets more readily, but oil from handling and silicone from stoppers still interfere. Cleanliness matters on both.
